Astigmatism vs Myopia: What Are the Differences

There are a number of eye conditions that can affect your vision, which are often grouped as refractive errors. Typically refractive errors occur due to an irregularity in the eye, including the cornea, lens and general shape of the eye. The most common refractive errors are myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. In this post, we will focus on myopia and astigmatism. Both of these refractive errors are different in some ways and similar in others.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness or shortsightedness, is a condition affecting people’s ability to see distant objects. It occurs when the length of the eye becomes too long, which causes light to fall short of the retina. This leads to blurry vision when looking at objects far away.

There are some common symptoms of myopia include:

  • Blurred vision or overcast of objects at long distance.
  • Headaches.
  • Squinting to concentrate on far objects.

What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a condition that occurs when an imperfection in the cornea or lens of your eyes causes light entering the eye to be scattered which causes cloudy vision. There are two types of astigmatism which are corneal and lenticular astigmatism. Both can affect anyone and at any age. There are some common symptoms of astigmatism:

  • Blurred vision at all distances.
  • Visual weakness.
  • Two-fold vision.
  • Red eyes.
  • Squint to center.

Astigmatism vs Myopia: What Are Their Differences

In the above part, we have shown some basic information for astigmatism and myopia. But, what are the differences between astigmatism and myopia? So, in this section, we will explain them.

First, one of the most common differences between them is that they are two distinctive refractive errors, people with myopia will have blurred vision at long distances, while people with astigmatism will have blurred vision at any distance.

Second, myopia occurs when the axial length of the eye is elongated. While for astigmatism, it occurs when the cornea or lens of the eye is not perfectly smooth and round as it should be.

Third, myopia results in light entering the eye being focused in front of the retina. However, in astigmatism, light is focused on multiple points on the retina.

Fourth, myopia occurs at the age of 8-14 and can stabilize around 15 to 21 years old. On the other hand, astigmatism can happen at any age.

However, there are also some similarities between myopia and astigmatism. Both of them can be corrected by wearing corrective glasses or surgery. Meanwhile, if you need a pair of corrective glasses, Koalaeye Optical is recommended. It is an online glasses and allows you to get a pair of prescription glasses. What’s more, Koalaeye glasses are stylish and cheap. So, if you need a pair of corrective glasses, Koalaeye glasses would be a good choice.
