In the previous article, we discussed “How do you adjust nose pads on glasses?”. In this article, let’s talk about “What are the different types of nose pads for eyeglasses?”.

The nose pad is the part of the frame that supports the bridge of the nose. That is, the part that supports the bridge of the nose and keeps the frame in place is called the nose pad. There are two kinds of nose pads. One is a fixed type, namely a non-metallic adhesive type. The other one is the movable type. The latter type is used in metal frames and is now available on some high-grade plate glasses. The movable type is held in place by welding the brackets.

Do all glasses come with nose pads?

The glasses without the nose brace are plate glasses. In reality, there is still a nose pad, but it is relatively small and it's part of the frame. The westerners have high nose bridges, and many glasses have no or very small nose pads. For example, Harry Potter's glasses have no nose pads. European and American brands will change their nose pads for the Asian market. Eyeglasses without a nose pad rely on the bridge of the nose to support the center beam. It's hard for Asians to stand up, and their eyes are more protruding than sunken like westerners. Glasses are usually demanded to keep a 12mm distance between the lens and the eyeball, otherwise, the optical performance will have a great impact.

The fixed nose pad is usually used on the plate frame. The nose pad and the frame form an organic whole. The maintenance is more convenient, unlike the movable type that should often twist a screw. It is not easy to hide dirt and dirt. But the disadvantage is that the angle of the nose pad can not be adjusted, and it can not fit the bridge of the nose greatly. The movable nose pad can be automatically adjusted up and down according to the shape of the bridge of the nose to ensure that the compression part of the bridge of the nose is evenly stressed and the local pressure is reduced. But the disadvantage is to often check the tightness of the screw, but often scrub clean. The silicone material usually used in the nose pad is easy to yellow after a long time, which affects the appearance.

The material of the nose pads

There are many differences between silica gel and PVC materials. For example, silicone can pass ROHS certification and is environmentally friendly. Silica gel is soft and feels good, while PVC products are rough. Silica gel products are soft, while PVC products are hard. Silica gel products are more flexible, but PVC has no toughness. Silica gel products are usually made to be more transparent. Glass frames made of plate material and TR-90 material, are relatively not heavy and non-allergic. Typically, the TR90 frame is cast to form a nose pad attached to the glasses ring. As the plate frame is cut out from compressed materials, the plate frame with a nose pad is usually injected into the nose pad after the frame is made.

I know it sounds silly but I have started using Silicon Eartips from earphone audio sets for my nosepieces. Reason being my glasses were so old that the nosepieces aren’t made any more. So had to improvise by squashing in some small sized silicon earbuds into the nose brackets. Suprisingly the most comfortable nosepieces I have ever had. Not that noticably different unless someone really has a close up look. I’m a nerd and don’t follow fashion anyhow so am not that self conscious ;p. Just an idea if you haven’t the nose pieces available as a temporary fix.
